SEASON OUTLOOK

With 14 experienced players returning
to this year's varsity squad, # 8 ranked
Spalding is positioned to make their
third appearance in the IAAM A
Conference championship game.  "We
have an abundance of talent returning
and our newcomers are also very
accomplished," remarks Brady.  She
feels one of the strengths of this team
will be its experience ... all over the
field.

Spalding will be led on defense by
seniors Brittany Palasik (All-County,
All-Conference) and Nicole Gaia.
Junior Shannon Palmer will also play a
key role, while depth on the defensive
unit will come from senior Lauren
Taneyhill and juniors Clare Billingsley
and Kaitlyn Antonelli.

Brady likes the balance, depth and
experience she has in the midfield,
especially in returning seniors Christy
Konrad, Megan Altig and Bethany
Love.  Junior Rachel Hannon, “with a
great overall awareness of the game”
will control the middle of the field.
Juniors Jacey Herbert and Lauren
Leadmon, two of the outstanding
newcomers added to the roster this
season, will also contribute to the team’
s success in the midfield.
Four experienced players return to the
Cavalier front line. Seniors Abby Lynch
(All-County, All-Conference), Kara
Johnson and Emily Geary as well as
junior Kaitlyn May.  Other players
looking to make an impact for the
Cavaliers on the forward line include
juniors Stephanie Paskal and Kelsey
Winkler and sophomore Jess Bates.
“All are poised and ready to do
whatever it takes to help the team.  The
bench will definitely be involved”, says
Brady of her team.

One of the biggest questions is where
to play Kat Gartner, a multi-faceted
player who can handle any position.  “I’
m impressed with her maturity on the
field, she has great one on one moves
and I expect her to create a lot of
scoring opportunities for us, comments
Brady.”

At goalkeeper, Spalding has two
returning players with experience.
Juniors Ciarra Delost and Bridget
Harner will look to hold off the high
octane offenses of the IAAM.

According to Brady, “Our strength lies
in the leadership of our nine seniors
and the experience of our returning
players. This experience as well as the
newcomer’s enthusiasm and
commitment to each other will fuel our
success this season.”

SPALDING DEFEATS GOOD
COUNSEL IN SEASON OPENER

Archbishop Spalding opened the 2007
season with a bang on Friday, posting
a 6-0 shutout over Good Counsel in
non-conference field hockey action in
Severn.
 Abby Lynch paced the
Cavaliers with two goals and one
assist, after which a collision with  an
opponent's stick led to a hospital visit
for stitches.

But Lynch wasn’t the only Cavalier to
find the back of the nets.  Junior
Stephanie Paskal also scored two
goals, and fellow junior
Kaitlyn May
handed out two assists and also
scored once.  Senior
Emily Geary also
got in the scoring act with one goal and
one assist.  Spalding took a 4-0 lead
into the half and was never threatened

Spalding’s defense totally shut down
Good Counsel.  Goalies
Bridget Harner
and
Ciarra Delost were barely tested,
making just one save in the lone shot
on goal, as their defenders kept the
action at the other end of the field.

Spalding gets another non-conference
test on Tuesday when it hosts
Georegown Visitation.  Then, open
conference play on Thursday with a
home match versus Roland Park
Country.

SPALDING DROPS A CLOSE ONE

Despite a 14 to 4 shot advantage,
Spalding dropped a close one to
Georgetown Visitation in non-league
play Tuesday, 2-1.  Abby Lynch was
the lone Cavailer to find the back of
the cage, which was well protected
by the visiting team.  The Cavaliers
open league play this Thursday as
they host Roland Park Country
School .
